Your Health Insurance And Your Vacation: What To Know Before You Go

Whenever one reads any reading matter likehealth insurance, it is vital that the person enjoys reading it. One should grasp the meaning of the matter, only then can it be considered that its reading is complete.

Nothing ruins a fabulous vacation faster than an unanticipated medical emergency—except, that is, experiencing such an emergency and knowing you are unprepared to handle it. Buying travel insurance before you leave for your trip won’t guard against emergencies, but it may ease some of the difficulty of dealing with whatever problem has interrupted your vacation.

Whether you are traveling for business or pleasure, you never know when something might happen. You could miss a flight and be stranded somewhere, your partner might have a heart attack, or you might be caught up in a natural disaster. Whatever the case may be, having additional options available will make the situation much more bearable.

Travel or vacation insurance is available in many formats. You can buy a basic package that protects you from logistical issues such as being bumped from a flight and not making your cruise departure, to more complex packages that incorporate logistical issues, health care, and loss or theft. You can also purchase limited policies that guard against specific risks or events either on or before your trip. For example, you may want an ‘out’ to cancel your walking tour of England if you broke your leg three days before your departure. Or you may want to purchase health coverage so that if you break you leg while on the walking tour, you can receive proper medical attention without having to deal with the possibility your provider won’t pay for care administered in another country. This is a super way to protect against loss of deposits and pre-paid expenses.

After many hopeless endeavors to produce something worthwhile on health insurance, this is what we have come up with. We are very hopeful about this!

Trip insurance can be purchased from a number of sources including your travel agent and insurance agent. In addition to the different kinds of travel or vacation insurance that are available, you can also find a plan that is flexible in terms of length. Policies may be obtained to cover a specific period such as two weeks, on a price-per-day open-ended basis, or, particularly in the case of organized vacations, for a flat rate covering your vacation getaway.

Vacation or travel health care insurance is a valuable tool, especially if you purchase a comprehensive policy that includes coverage death or injury to yourself or your family/travel companions; accidents or illness requiring hospitalization while at your vacation destination; emergency dental work; ambulance fees, medi-coptor, or transport back to the United States while you are abroad; and, medical evacuation to a safe location if necessary. You may have comprehensive domestic health care insurance in the United States, but many plans provided by insurance, HMO or governmental organizations are not honored if you require medical attention while abroad.

Long before you leave home, while you are still in the planning stages of your vacation or business trip, it is wise to review your existing health care insurance package to see what, if any, coverage you may have while in transit or once you have reached your destination. Pay special attention to the exclusions section of your agreement, and if you are confused or unclear about any of the language, contact your provider for a more understandable explanation. In fact, have your provider review the entire policy with you so you can take note of what coverage you have, what documentation you need to carry in order to access insurance-sponsored health care while you are away, and any particular accommodations you may need to make, such as whether family members have to be named individually on your agreement in order to be protected.

It is only because that we are rather fluent on the subject of health insurance that we have ventured on writing something so influential on health insurance like this!

We can proudly say that there is no competition to the meaning of health insurance, when comparing this article with other articles on health insurance found on the net.

By figuring out what coverage you have, you can avoid the cost of purchasing duplicate coverage. You may think you are doubling your protection by buying a redundant policy, but almost all plans exclude coverage of claims that can be made under an already existing policy.

So should you buy travel health insurance? Probably. Hopefully you will never need it, but you will have to make a personal decision about whether you are willing to take a chance to save a couple hundred dollars or less. Your destination and the nature of your trip should be considered when making a decision. For example, an authentic African safari or wilderness white water rafting trip has a higher probably of medical implications than a seniors’ train tour, but life isn’t predictable. Assess your risk, financial capability to handle possible emergencies and your comfort level, and work from there.

Dog Health Problems – Guide to Understanding

Our dogs are not all that dissimilar from us when it comes to health. Dogs can experience obesity, cancer, arthritis, anxiety, etc. Knowing when to make a veterinarian appointment and when to allow your dog to work through an illness is the question pet owners frequently ask. It is not as if your dog can tell you what is happening so being prepared and understanding dog health problems are our best defense.

When any dog is not feeling well they begin to show signs and one the easiest for pet owners to recognize is a change in behavior. If they seem disoriented or slightly off-balance, this could be a sign of an ear infection. Checking your dog’s ears regularly and keeping them clean during regular grooming can help prevent an ear infection.

Often the signs that your dog is having health problems will show up in urine and defecation. An intense odor from urine may indicate a bladder infection while an elevated need to relieve themselves could be a sign of Cushing’s disease. Changes in color and viscosity in defecation may point to a digestive problem. This could be as simple as changing your dog’s diet or brand of dog food to quickly or perhaps something worse.

One the more serious dog health problems is obesity. Dog obesity can lead to a host of issues like heart disease, diabetes, and joint problems. Keep your dog trim and fit by reading the labels on their dog food bags. Most inexpensive commercial dog food contains fillers and sugar. Moreover, while an active dog at a very young age may seem to be able to burn off the calories there is nothing offered in the food to build their immune system. Older inactive dogs will quickly gain weight and experience all the health problems that accompany dog obesity.

Several different brands of dog food are designed specifically for your dog; changing ingredients as a dog ages. Diet is a wonderful preventive for dog health problems. A good quality dog food with wholesome ingredients will provide the protein a growing and active dog needs while giving their immune system a boost. By feeding your dog the appropriate dog food for their age and activity group, you can prevent costly Vet visits down the road.

Allergies are another dog health problem that can affect some dogs. Dogs will show similar symptoms as humans when suffering from allergies. Watery eyes, sneezing, and runny nose are common. Check your household cleaners and see if they are pet friendly. If not, observe where dog spends his time noticing if he/she is coming in contact of the cleaner.

Generally speaking, when your dog reaches the age of 10 to 12 years old they are considered a senior citizen. Depending on the size of the breed signs of old age, may appear earlier or later. Dog health problems at this time in their lives could be cataracts, hearing loss, cancer, and joint pain associated with arthritis. The signs to look for are licking of the joints, slow walking especially up stairs, and cannot seem to hear you when you call or bumps into furniture as they walk through the room.

No matter the symptoms of dog health problems your four-legged family member is demonstrating never take a chance. If symptoms persist after you have checked all the common issues mentioned in this article consult with your Veterinarian or use the service on the Remarkable Dogs home page and “Ask a Vet.”

As pet owners, we speak for them so keeping track of your dog’s behavior, diet, and daily needs are your best defense to dog health problems. Regular bi-annual checkups from your Veterinarian as well as observation while making some minor changes at home can prevent a host of dog health problems.

New college grads wrestle with health insurance : Steve Twedt

Graduating senior Meredith Johnson’s wake-up call came when her University of Pittsburgh roommate realized she’d waited too long to schedule the dentist appointment to remove three impacted wisdom teeth. She couldn’t get in until after graduation, when she’d have a diploma but no individual health insurance. EasyToInsureME your online individual health insurance source”She said she didn’t know how to pay for it,” said Ms. Johnson, 22, who concedes she hadn’t given health insurance much thought before that. Now, after moving back home to Lower Merion, Montgomery County, Ms. Johnson is working part-time as a waitress, a job with no benefits. When it comes to insurance, she admits, “I have a low-grade panic going.”Carrie Potter, 21, who graduated from Point Park University Saturday, says she’s “horrified” at the prospect of having no job and no individual health insurance. She wants to work but says she may have to look at graduate school instead.”I would do that only for the health insurance, which is a sad reality,” she said.Down the street, meanwhile, soon-to-be graduated Emily Dearring, 23, plans to move home with her Mom in Columbus, Ohio, until her Art Institute of Pittsburgh degree helps her land a graphic design job. Needed dental work, which forces her to wear a retainer, will have to wait.Graduation from college can mean the commencement of big worries anytime. This year may be particularly tough because, while landing a good job maybe at the top of the graduates’ worry list, health insurance is close behind. The Kaiser Family Foundation reported last year that adults 19 to 29 have the highest uninsured rate of any age group.Part of the reason is that the U.S. health-care system is based on insurance being provided by employers. In the best of times, entry-level jobs with insurance benefits are uncommon, and often coverage doesn’t kick in for a few months. This year is not the best of times. When a group of Western Pennsylvania universities, colleges and community colleges held their annual job fair at the Pittsburgh Indoor Soccer Arena this spring, fewer than half the usual number of potential employers came.”A lot of them were just talking to people. They weren’t there to hire anyone,” said Tony Linnan, co-director of career services at Slippery Rock University.Preliminary results from a student survey earlier this month by the National Association of Colleges and Employers found 19 percent of undergraduate seniors who applied for work had a job lined up after graduation, compared with 25 percent a year ago.The standard fallback position for new graduates has been to stay on their parents’ insurance, costly by itself, but that assumes parents still have their jobs. Even if that’s true, some graduates say they don’t want to be a continuing financial burden to their families.”I want to be grown-up. I want to be on my own,” said Ms. Potter, who has three younger siblings still at home in Shaler. What are the alternatives? EasyToInsureME.com offers insurance for $2 per day from the 2nd largest health insurance company in the countryPoint Park this year is offering short-term medical insurance for new graduates through Illinois-based Marsh CampusConnexions that allows its graduates to continue their school health coverage for 12 months, renewable for two additional years.Monthly premiums are typically less than $150 plus a $500 deductible. The plan covers treatment for injuries including hospitalizations. Routine doctor visits are not covered.Individual plans are another option for new graduates. Online insurance broker EasyToInsureME can connect local graduates with high-deductible ($5,000 to $10,000), low-premium ($35 to $55 per month) policies. The Internet company also suggests graduates consider several factors, such as talking with an insurance agent if they have a pre-existing chronic condition, becoming familiar with insurance terminology and considering short-term insurance plans that typically last six months to buy time while job hunting.Meanwhile, the Pennsylvania Insurance Department’s adultBasic health plan for the uninsured, which covers routine doctors’ visits, hospitalizations and emergency room visits for accidents, has a waiting list of more than 200,000.Those who meet income requirements and are on the waiting list can get the same coverage if they can pay on average a $330 monthly premium until a spot opens, said insurance department spokeswoman Rosanne Placey. Once in the program, monthly premiums average about $35.Compared with COBRA payments, that may sound like a good deal. But it’s not something a new college grad necessarily wants to think about.”It’s the adult stuff. It’s the stuff your parents do,” said Ms. Johnson. “It’s one of those things you’ll have to save for that’s not a fun thing. It’s not like saving for a car.”

FisaCure Plays Role at the Secretarial Summit on Health Information Technology

Dallas, TX July 27, 2004 — FisaCure, the leading provider of HIPAA-compliant transaction sets for electronic remittance services, strongly supports Health and Human Services Secretary Tommy G. Thompson’s outline of a 10-year plan to transform the delivery of healthcare by building a new health information infrastructure, including electronic health records (EHR) and a new network to link health records nationwide. Ed Jones, executive vice president for FisaCure, Inc., participated as a “reactor panelist” at last week’s Secretarial Summit on Health Information Technology held in Washington, DC. The HHS Secretary and David Brailer, M.D., the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology, sponsored the event.

In its early development of electronic remittance processing (ERP), FisaCure has pioneered the industry in products and services to automate and enhance the efficiency of provider receivables management. The receivable management solutions automate the conversion of paper Explanation of Payments (EOP) and electronic remittance files to create a strategic advantage for providers by reducing receivable posting and research costs. It has created new industry standards, such as Web-based image retrieval services linked to receivables workflow and analysis. FisaCure now has over five years of experience in enhancing the electronic remittance transactions for multiple providers and payers. In doing so, it believes it has already established one of the key foundations to make EHRs a reality by leading in the key goals of establishing continuity of health records over a patient’s lifetime, providing a platform of collaboration between service providers, enabling the infrastructure for integration of knowledge for decision support and the aggregation of health information over a population.

In his role as Chair of the Board of Directors of the Workgroup for Electronic Data Interchange (WEDI), FisaCure’s Jones joined business and healthcare leaders from around the United States who reacted to Secretary Thompson and Dr. Brailer’s strategic framework for “a new vision for healthcare made possible through the use of information technology.”

In his remarks, Jones said, “HHS should bolster federal support, through educational initiatives and investment and reimbursement incentives, of continued development and implementation of interoperable Electronic Health Record (EHR) standards that sustain seamless integration of clinical and business workflows and accommodate real-time claims and remittance processing.” Jones also noted the significant progress the federal government has made in government-wide adoption of healthcare standards under its Consolidated Health Informatics (CHI) program and deployment of EHR technologies provides an exemplar for the private sector of the healthcare industry.

“The federal CHI program adopts the HIPAA transactions and code standards along with clinical standards,” stated Steve Arning, president of FisaCure. “This will lead to integration of administrative (business) and clinical functions in one EHR system. Through our early advances in this arena, we have proven that FisaCure’s secure Internet-accessible, HIPAA-compliant solutions attain measurable value by combining workflow tools and analysis with remittance information. We see many applications for these advances and intend to further our lead in the development of these technologies.”

For providers, FisaCure today provides HIPAA-compliant 835 remittance and auto-posting solutions that can be seamlessly integrated into providers’ EHR systems as they are deployed in the future. For banks, FisaCure’s solutions can strengthen a provider’s customer relationship with its financial institution, and allows banks to offer cost-saving technology to its customers. For health plans, FisaCure’s solutions can eliminate administrative costs associated with deploying paper EOPs to banks and providers as part of the payment process.

About FisaCure (www.FisaCure.com)

FisaCure, founded in 1996, is headquartered in Dallas, Texas. FisaCure specializes in providing the HIPAA-compliant transaction sets for electronic remittance services. Other areas of expertise include: claims and coding edits, electronic appeals and contract management applications for both providers and payers. Over the years, FisaCure has forged strategic partnerships that have extended its capabilities and created new industry standards, including Web-based image retrieval services.

While most of the health care industry is just becoming familiar with electronic remittance processing, FisaCure has more than five years experience enhancing the delivery of electronic remittance transactions for multiple providers and provider information systems. FisaCure continues to develop new rules and procedures to reduce provider exceptions and therefore maximize the benefit of electronic remittance processing for customers.

Green Tea and Health Benefits – An Interesting Critique

Judging by the research, it seems that green tea and health benefits go together like two peas in a pod. There’s been a lot of media coverage. Diet doctors appear on television promoting the beverages and the supplements. One of them told viewers that they could lose 10 pounds in six weeks by switching from coffee to green tea. Are these exaggerations or overstatements? Let’s take a look.

There are thousands of published studies concerning green tea and health benefits. But according to the US Food and Drug Administration, there is only enough clear evidence to allow manufacturers to make one valid health claim: a reduced risk of prostate and breast cancer. That’s only a small portion of what researchers have been saying and supplement manufacturers have been claiming.

It may help lower cholesterol, reduce your risk of heart disease, improve brain function, reduce your risk of neurodegenerative diseases, protect the cells of the body from damaging free radicals and reduce inflammation, which means a reduced risk of arthritis. If you think all of these benefits are unusual, you don’t know much about plants.

A plant has a variety of natural defense mechanisms. It encounters more oxidative stress than the human body could bear. It must be able to fight viruses, fungi and bacteria. Older plants have more of these natural defenses, because they develop over time.

Two of the longest-lived trees in the world are ginkgo biloba and the olive tree. Extracts from the leaves of these trees have medicinal benefits, ranging from antibiotic activity to increased oxygen content in the cells of the brain.

So while the studies concerning green tea and health benefits may be interesting, there are other plants of interest. At this time, it is just one of the more popular plants. Many researchers continue to look for a magic pill that will make everyone well again. Some researchers have taken a different route.

One of the best supplements on the market was developed by a scientist and doctor of naturopathic medicine. Instead of a single magic ingredient, the supplements he has developed contain over 70 different bio-active ingredients.

Many of them are plant extracts like the ones mentioned above. Some are basic vitamins and minerals, as it is highly unlikely that anyone is getting all of the nutrients the human body needs through diet alone.

If you’re interested in reading more about the studies concerning green tea and health benefits, you can visit Pub-Med, a database for these and other health studies. It can be very dry reading and the terminology is often difficult for the average person to understand, but if you look at the sheer number of studies that have been conducted, it will become obvious that there is something special about this plant.

You might also look up the latest studies about vitamin D and calcium. Researchers are saying they reduce our cancer risk too. There may be more studies about green tea and health benefits in the future. Right now, the best bet is to take a multi-nutritional supplement that contains it.

Latest Trends in Health Insurance

Most Americans are beneficiaries of healthcare coverage in multiple ways which include private insurance coverage arranged by their employers, coverage purchased on their own and public insurance programs such as Medicare and Medicaid. It is believed that about 160 million Americans enjoy employer-sponsored health insurance, and another 13 million have bought insurance directly from an insurer or HMO. Total spending for health care services continues to steeply rise – from $1.4 trillion in 2001 to an estimated figure of $3.1 trillion in 2012.

Insurance premium for people with private insurance have risen drastically in recent years. At the same time, consumers are also suffering because their out-of-pocket costs for deductibles and other cost sharing have gone up significantly over the same period.

While coverage availability has somewhat declined for those having employer coverage, a lackluster economy and high unemployment rate have intensified problems faced by those seeking individual coverage. The economists have to find ways to control increases in health care costs and to provide coverage for the uninsured.

Paying contributions, however small, towards health insurance policies discourage workers from joining the insurance scheme. Statistics reveal that about 20 percent of all uninsured people live in families where a worker has declined employer-sponsored insurance coverage. The refusal to avail employer-sponsored insurance is mostly because of the cost involved. For many, the health insurance is less of a priority compared to food and housing.

It must also be stated that the costs of private health insurance have risen steeply particularly in relation to a workers average earnings and general inflation. In the past three years, insurance premiums have increased between 10.9 and 13.9 percent annually, while workers’ wages have grown only between 2 & 3 percent.

The cost of health care is certainly burdensome for most Americans but it those with limited means are hit the hardest. Nearly 75% of low-income group adults reported some difficulty obtaining health coverage.

Consequently, 44 percent of low-income group adults remain uninsured at compared with only 13 percent of moderate- and higher-income adults in the non-insured category. Despite the fact that the United States is spending nearly $200 billion every year on tax incentives for health insurance, 46.6 million people still lack health coverage.

The one redeeming news is children-especially those in low-income families have somewhat gained in insurance coverage. Even with regard to uninsured children, more than 50% of them are eligible for Medicaid or the State Children’s Health Insurance Program (SCHIP)-the two public insurance programs responsible for providing coverage to low-income group children.

Established in 1997, the State Children’s Health Insurance Program provides states the authority and funding to expand health insurance coverage to low-income children by broadening Medicaid eligibility, developing new child health programs, or a combination of both.

While Medicaid and the State Children’s Health Insurance Program has effectively covered low-income group children, the same cannot be said for children in middle-income group families, for whom access to Medicaid and SCHIP is not easily accessible. Yet the unfortunate fact remains that racial and ethnic disparities in children’s health insurance coverage persist, despite all gains.

As public coverage is generally not available to adults, almost 50% of the increase in uninsured adults belong to the low-incomes group leaving their families at great risk for being uninsured.

New Health and Safety CPD from the RIBA

The recent high profile Construction Safety Summit, called by the Health and Safety Commission and the Deputy Prime Minister, John Prescott, has been well received by the industry. General secretary of construction union UCATT, George Brumwell, pretty much summed things up when he said:

โ€œ We fully support the initiatives of the government. It is quite clear that following Egan and the summit, the government means business. There is no doubt about it, the construction industry’s attitude towards the workforce has to be brought fairly and squarely into the 21st century.โ€

There is certainly room for improving the management of health and safety risks. In the year 2000 alone – 80 people were killed on building sites (mainly through falls, objects falling from above and being hit by vehicles); there were 400 health and safety prosecutions in the construction industry; and almost half of the 4000 or so notices served by the Health and Safety Executive to prevent dangerous practices, were in construction.

Broadly, there are three essentials for more effective health and safety compliance – safe people, safe places and safe systems. Tim Gough, VP Practice RIBA and the man responsible for health and safety issues, has his own views on the subject:

โ€œThe construction industry must address the issues relating to the traditional lack of overall management and awareness of risks in general. Our members are in a good position to think strategically about these issues and take a lead wherever possible in helping to change the attitude and culture that prevails in the industry.

One key to this is to try and encourage cooperation and collaboration at all levels, in a properly managed environment. If architects are to make a contribution to this thinking, then of course they need the training to be able to implement it.

Architectural students are now being taught to โ€˜think safety’ and the RIBA CPD Providers Network, which exists to encourage the highest standards of professional conduct amongst architects and other construction professionals, has an increasing number of members already active in offering accredited CPD seminars on various topics relating to health and safety issuesโ€.

For those who may not be familiar with the CPD scheme, every corporate member of the RIBA is required to attain 35 hours and 100 points of CPD every year. Most commonly these sessions take the form of a Powerpoint presentation followed by an opportunity for discussion and questions. They are free and are usually held at the corporate members own premises.

Ways to Find the Right Pet Health Insurance Company

For pet owners who want to find the best pet health insurance company, there are a lot of factors to consider. You might be surprised to learn that the insurance policies for pets are very much like what we humans have. Such policies have annual premiums. The deductible will depend on the age and general health of your dog or cat. And there are various types of coverage plans that you can choose that are tailored for the benefit of your pet. With so many factors, how do you choose the right pet health insurance plan for YOUR pet? You want what is best for him (or her) and your family. Here are a few questions that you should ask when searching for the pet health insurance health policy that is best for all of you. 1. Ask your vet. Get advice and recommendations from the one you trust the most with your furry friends — your vet. They can explain for you what to look out for and the special needs that your pet might have. In addition, they will explain what programs that they support and if they are members of a certain plan. (Note: Most pet health insurance companies allow all vets to use their service — unlike many human plans, pet health insurance policies do not have “doctor lists”). Hopefully, talking to your vet will ease some of your doubts about pet health and you know that your choice is a good one. 2. Choose a stable company — one that has been around for a few years minimum. The business of pet insurance has been around in the United States for over 25 years. As you ask around about the available pet health insurance policies just do a simple background check about the company’s stability. You need to make sure that your money and your pets health will be in the right hands. 3. Look closely at the coverage of the pet insurance plan. The broader it is, the better. Choose the one that offers coverage for some chronic conditions like diabetes and other forms of allergies, dental situations and prescription drugs. 4. Make sure that the pet health insurance company has a veterinarian employed by them. If they are to insure your pet, you want to be sure that they have someone who will understand your concerns and needs regarding your pet. 5. The insurance provider must give you leeway in terms of your choice for veterinary professionals. The policy must not limit your choices of hospitals or veterinarians where you can bring your pets when certain situations or emergencies arise. 6. You must be sure that the insurance will be ready for use upon the effective date from its approval and issuance. Do not choose insurance providers that will make you wait a certain time before you can start using the policy that you have already paid for. There is, usually, a 7. All transactions must be transparent. Make sure that the company provides you with the important information about every transaction that you have to deal with them. Ask them about everything that you want to know, the coverage, the benefits, the payment schedules and other things that you want to be clear about. These are just a few of the questions that you must take into consideration when you are looking for pet health. Most pet health insurance companies have online registration site that will include a FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) sections. Be sure to read these carefully as, be assured, you’re not the only one with the same questions!
